China Trying Public Campaign to Stop Spread of HIV
Brochures and posters in subway stations part of the effort. Story notes that many of the 120 million migrant workers in the country are illiterate. Public health efforts depend on a literate population.

Mobile-Phone Photo of Miami Beach Plane Crash
Nearly-universal access to technology really does change news reporting. Photographer is a 14-year-old boy. And there's amateur video of the crash, too.

Threats and Dangers (2005.12.20)
President Relies Heavily on "This is a Different War" to Justify Domestic Surveillance
But every war is "different" in its own way: Vietnam was the first to involve an "insurgency" rather than a clear army of regulars; the US had never fought a proxy war against another superpower before Korea; WWII included unprecedented aerial firebombing; WWI was groundbreaking in its scope; the Spanish-American War was the first so exhaustively covered by the media; the Civil War was the first internecine fight; etc., etc., ad infinitum. The question is whether the President overstepped his legal authority, and no amount of squabbling about how "different" the "war on terrorism" may be can or should change that.
