Election 2004 (11.08.2004)
This Calls for a Heaping Helping of STFU
Democrats might just have a chance of winning over the economic conservatives and libertarians who were the real swing vote in 2004 if they'd stop thinking that everyone who isn't on the left is an evangelical Christian. There are only 16 million Southern Baptists, compared to somewhere around 60 million Roman Catholics. 23 million Americans own small businesses. Go ahead and think it's about who wins the "Me and Jesus" vote. It's not, and it's a gross mischaracterization to act like it is. Bush may have been a weak economic pick, but Kerry was downright awful. Your first step to recovery: Admit that there are huge problems with Social Security and Medicare. Second: Belly up to the free-trade table. Third: Act like you're going to cut the size of government. Then you might have a prayer with the non-prayer voters.
