"Many people know the old joke that 'I wrote a 500-page dissertation because I didn't have time to write a 200-page dissertation,' but it remains true that there's a major difference between the 'order of discovery' and the 'order of presentation.' We authors need to realize that not everything we've learned is really worth our readers' time. We should be doing some of the work of culling and prioritizing for them."
