Left-hand side of page: Clear aerial view of a field and some buildings. Right-hand side of page: Manually blurred view of an airport on Long Island. Yet the F-16s at the Des Moines International Airport are unretouched. Interesting.

Richard Branson may be a little crazy, but he understands the power of incentives. Thus he's created the "Virgin Earth Challenge", which will offer a $25 million prize to anyone who can come up with a commercially-viable way of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. That's a huge prize -- even larger than other inducement prizes of the past and present. Branson's offer lines up rather squarely with the most sensible way to reduce energy consumption.
