Who gets to control the world's fastest supercomputer?
The NSF wants to buy a $200 million supercomputer from IBM and run it at UIUC. but they also want a similar computer to go to the University of Tennessee to be run by the Department of Energy. That makes other people in the supercomputing community suspicious. What's funny about it all is that the supercomputer of ten years ago operates at a fraction of the speed of a bleeding-edge machine today.
