Senator Dick Durbin has sent a letter to American companies demanding to know what they're doing to protect human rights in places like China. Nice intentions, but completely wrongheaded. The bosses at Twitter could be sitting in the room with the Chinese Politburo and doing exactly what they ask to spy on human-rights activists, and they still wouldn't be hurting human rights around the world quite as much as Congress does by racking up insane levels of debt, which the Chinese government buys...giving them interest income that in turn empowers them to do whatever they want.

Speaking of that debt, the government is raising the Federal debt ceiling by $1.9 trillion, a number that's so large it dwarfs most others. Stunning. With $12.3 trillion in debt and 308 million of us living here, we're on the hook for $40,000 per person. Every man, woman, and child. It's out of control.

And the really scary part to all this: More debt means lower economic growth in the long term.
